How does Bankruptcy work?

Filing for bankruptcy in any province in Canada is done exclusively with the help of a Licensed Insolvency Trustee (LIT). With us, you’ll start with a free consultation to review your debts, income, and assets. If bankruptcy is the right choice, we will file the paperwork with the federal government to officially start the process. Once filed, all collection calls and most wage garnishments stop and most debts are stayed.

While some assets are not exempt from liquidation, the good news is, many essentials are protected by law, such as clothing, household goods, tools you use for work, and in most cases, a portion of the equity in your home or vehicle. During bankruptcy, you will be required to make monthly payments according to your income, submit monthly income and expense reports and attend two financial counselling sessions. In exchange, you can obtain discharge from bankruptcy, which will extinguish your obligation towards eligible debts, and you can begin rebuilding your credit with a clean slate.
